Last week I embarked on the adventure that is vacation bible school. Our theme was treasure island and it was a heck of a lot of work. The church we attend is like its own business entity replete with a K-12 school, full library, 2 gift stores, cafeteria, small chapel, 1 band, 1 orchestra, choir, special needs wing, football field, baseball field, pregnancy center, fitness center, basketball court, soccer field, softball field and of course a Starbucks. To say that this place has it all is a major understatement.
I was given the daunting task of 'director' over a class of 25-30 4 year olds and thank goodness I had 4 helpers in the room. As director I decided to take more of a hands on role rather than a micromanaging role...so in essence I did a lot of the major tasks like story time, game time, (most) of craft time. I also lead story time for our fundraising effort for Sudan. I am proud to say that our class won a pizza party for raising the most money for Sudan in our age group. The kids really enjoyed simulating Sudanese kids walking 4 miles with a bucket of water on their heads even though it WAS indoors.... Their time at the bounce house was fun but, the cutest moment was when our kids visited the petting zoo and saw the horse with a pink pony tail. They asked me several times how that horse got pink hair.
I'll admit that I was reluctant to give my time to serve in vbs..but the reward far outweighed the cost. I was a part of the seed planting process to reach kids for Christ (4,000) of them to be exact-and my son got to be a part of it all too (you can never be too young!)----a truly noble cause indeed.
